He Restores my Soul

He Restores My Soul (Psalm 23)
Copyright by Becka deHaan, revised 2009

Living here in this pasture land
I know I have nothing to want.
I can graze and rest in this soft green grass;
And when the sun gets hot, my Shepherd leads me to a cool fresh lake.

If it weren’t for him, I don’t know where I’d be today;
Probably still where he found me, about to be swallowed by that pack of wolves.
But…
Chorus: He restores my soul, for the sake of his own name:
If I’m lost, he’s out there searching, beckoning me back.
I cannot contain my joy, it overflows onto the ground.
And the best part is: This pasture land is home, and I’ll live here for all of time.

We go for walks, my Shepherd and I,
Through winter snow or summer sand.
Sometimes miles and miles in a deadly zone;
But he’s going on ahead, got protection on both sides.

But when all we pass is a tree from time to time,
That is when we’ll burst into that old favourite song.
‘Cause…

[Chorus]

We come home to a table all set out;
My enemies can’t take the scene.

Yeh, incredible goodness and everlasting love
Will accompany me all the days of my life!
And…

He restores my soul, for the sake of his own name:
If I’m lost, he’s out there searching, beckoning me back.
He restores my soul, bringing all of me to life:
Lays my body still, my dizzy mind is given breath.
I cannot contain my joy, it overflows onto the ground.
And the best part is: This pasture land is home;
And the best part is: This pasture land is home;
I’m home, and I’ll live here for all of time.
All of time (ad libs)

A Sunny Storm

A Sunny Storm
Copyright 2006 by Becka deHaan

She said, “Why does the rain keep falling down on me?
They say one day it’s supposed to clear up again.
Can’t remember the last time the sky was blue.
Don’t leave me here to writhe in pain until God knows when!

But now the dawn is breaking;
I guess that means the sun is still around.
The clouds just hide it from my view;
In everything that I go through,
Show me where a beam can be found.”

Chorus: Thunder crashes into rays;
Sunlight fades away to haze;
Snowflakes swirl around to face the brightest star.
On a hot day, north winds blow;
IN a downpour, a rainbow.
Between good and bad, and bad and good is not so far;
‘Cause in its present form
Life is a sunny storm.

He said, “I want to stop the clock on days like these,
Where everything is well and going right.
I feel the sun smiling on the world;
It should last for quite awhile, there’s not a cloud in sight.

But the water cycle still continues;
Clouds are still being formed in the atmosphere.
Something’s gonna go wrong I bet,
‘Cause I know I’m not in Heaven yet,
But I’ll enjoy today while it’s clear!”

[Chorus]

What’s with this tug of war?
When you know you’ve got the victory anyway.
When you come back
There’ll be no mistaking that.
‘Cause it’s gonna be an endlessly bright day, yeh yeh!

Oh, but for now…
[Chorus]

Wait for the Wind

Wait for the Wind
Copyright 2006 by Becka deHaan

Hang on, Sister, your time has not yet come,
Though you truly are prepared to set sail.
Your route’s been chosen, the sun is overhead
And you’ve run every test completely without fail.

But this calm day it does you naught
‘Cause with no wind you’ll stay in one spot.
For the boat to go a good pace the wind must be quite strong—so just wait…
And hope it won’t take long!

Chorus: Wait for the sudden gust for your
Your confirmation;
Wait for the gentle breeze
To determine your next location.
Stay here till you get the cue to take on all you dare;
And when you’re certain of the what and how but unsure of the where,
Seek propelling guidance, without which you won’t win,
But never worry, just wait for the wind.

Hello, Brother, looks like you’re ready
To tuck away the wheels and take to the sky:
The runway’s clear and the engines fueled and running well—
Soon you’ll be thirty-five thousand feet high.

But don’t take off until you know
From which direction the wind does blow.
Go away from it, no control it will bring, but into it…
Supports you under the wings.

[Chorus]

It’s not a passive idleness,
A patience that puts you to sleep;
But it’s an active expectancy:
All alertness you must keep!

Wait for the gust…
Wait for the breeze…
[rest of chorus]
But never worry,
Oooo never worry,
Just wait for the wind.

Love Without Forgiveness

Love Without Forgiveness
Lyric by April Holder; Music by Becka deHaan, copyright 2008

Like heaven without eternity;
A prayer without sincerity
That’s love without forgiveness.
The quiet without serenity;
A song without a melody
That’s love without forgiveness.

Chorus: ‘Cause love was meant to ease the pain;
Forgive the wrong, forget the blame.
Love lets go where hurt hangs on,
And love won’t keep
Keep a record of wrongs.

An angel without the light;
A star without the moonlight
That’s love without forgiveness.
A promise without the truth;
Mercy without the proof
That’s love without forgiveness.
[Chorus]

Trust isn’t trust without a soft place to fall;
Well love without forgiveness isn’t’ love at all.

[Chorus]

Don't Let Nobody Drag your Spirit Down

Thrilling Atlantic

Thrilling Atlantic

Becka deHaan, copyright 2009

On the softest of moss on Thanksgiving Monday, what am I grateful for?
December’s approaching and August has passed and October is simply a bore.
They’ve all come to visit with family and friends and to drink in this Maritime scene
Of leaves turning orange, bright red and golden
That only shows that they’re losing their green.

The beauty around me is all too romantic;
Why am I missing this thrilling Atlantic?

Chorus: Autumn air cooling down with style;
And the birds always know that the spring’s on file
‘cause those long frosty moons still pull the tide.
Round the campfire, hear their song;
Till the harvest it won’t be long;
Guess I should be blessed in this land to abide.

Wading in this kind of powerful water leaves you with salty wet sand;
And the waves are so steady that after an hour this Sunday becomes rather bland.
Or hike till you’re breathless o’er roots and through branches to gaze at a mountain-top view.
From seafood to blueberries and maple syrup
Of these there is plenty, so take some with you.

The beauty around me is all too romantic;
Why am I missing this thrilling Atlantic?

[Chorus]

Now that I’ve lived some two years out west
A walk on the hillside or coast I’d request;
Send me home soon, ‘cause I’m getting frantic;
Why am I missing the thrilling Atlantic?

Autumn air cooling down with style;
And the birds always know that the spring’s on file
‘cause those long frosty moons still pull the tide.
Round the campfire, hear our song;
Till the harvest it won’t be long;
I am truly blessed in this land to abide.
I am truly blessed in this land to abide.

On the softest of moss on Thanksgiving Monday, what am I grateful for?

Training To Fly

Training to Fly
Copyright by Becka deHaan, revised 2009

There goes the alarm;
I’m not properly armed;
How can I face the day?
It’s going downhill fast;
Only a minute’s passed,
I’m already in disarray.

Didn’t you say you make all things new?
So what should I be worrying for?
Hurry up and send me the faith
And the frame of mind to soar…

Chorus: UP over the clouds, then the sun always shines;
Where I don’t have to drive in between all the lines.
But like a child I can be
Creative and free
To bring to being everything I imagine.
And as the eagle I’m high
In this summer sky
My soul to earth no longer attaching.
When my time is spent in you
I adopt your view,
And there the world fits like a glove
When seen from above.

I’ve waited long enough;
Of course my day was rough;
You didn’t deliver that mail.
But now that I’m back in bed
It’s time I cleared my head;
I know that you will prevail.

Here we are, enjoying an evening swim;
Don’t make me open my eyes.
As we progress farther from the shore
My self begins to rise!

[Chorus]

Thank you for the pair of wings you gave with so much grace;
But still your bounty goes beyond, and meets me face to face:
Thanks for training me to fly!

[Chorus]

The Dawn of Midnight

The Dawn of Midnight
Copyright by Becka deHaan, revised 2009

O to take control of time;
Skip the night and go to day.
Bid the morning bells to chime;
‘Cause this one’s had enough to say.
But not even moonlight promises to help it rearrange.

In the bedside lamp’s soft glow
Unnoticed by the spinning earth
The digits of the clock now show
A new date is at its birth.
Archiving all mistakes and mishaps safe from the display.

Chorus: Because mercies are new
With tomorrow in view
And all yesterday gone.
No more pacing about
No more shuffling in doubt
Now it’s time to walk on.
There’s hope and contentment
Now that this event in
The calendar’s started to spawn.
Though the air gives no light
Everything is in sight;
Though it’s dark, it’s the dawn
The dawn of midnight.

So much for the resolution;
Most of those goals weren’t even met.
This year’s been mainly contribution
To pain and regret.
And now it’s cold, as it has been
Even dropping a degree;
But everyone here makes a scene
To welcome in the year with glee.
And suddenly the summer sun
Is ahead and not behind;
There’s freedom of the heart to run
After all that it has pined!

[Chorus]

Just when life is frozen, black,
Drained and without form;
God will begin to shape it back
To colours bright and warm.
[Chorus]

Don't Worry about Tomorrow

Don’t Worry about Tomorrow
Words and Music by Walter Thiessen, copyright 1985

What will I eat;
What will I drink;
What will I wear?
Will I have enough for tomorrow?
Will I be cold;
Will I be filled?
I seem to need so much.
I’m just worried about tomorrow.
I’m just worried about tomorrow.

Look at the birds in the sky:
They don’t sow or reap;
They don’t store their food in barns.
And yet your father in Heaven feeds them;
They don’t worry about tomorrow.
They don’t worry about tomorrow.

So seek first the Kingdom of God;
And your relationship to him.
And he’ll take care of all of your needs;
You don’t’ have to worry about tomorrow.
Don’t you worry about tomorrow
Don’t you worry about tomorrow
Don’t’ you worry about tomorrow.
